Verifiable Origin Infrastructure

Every regulated shipment now asks the same question. Volum answers it in code.

A distributed origin protocol for the platform-native supply chain. Certificates as cryptographic records. Custody as an event stream. Verification across customs, buyers, and auditors, against one source of truth.

01 The Problem

Paper origin has run out of room.

A modern commodity shipment is subject to four to seven separate origin instruments, each interpreted by a different authority, each with its own vocabulary and binding date. A single paper certificate cannot carry that weight.

Between CBAM, the EU Deforestation Regulation, DSCSA lot-level traceability, and the first mandatory Digital Product Passports, origin is now a machine question. The paper certificate is the version that fails.

02 The film

From origin to proof.

A short walk through the paper problem, the Volum protocol, and the regulatory floor now dated in every trading bloc.

03 The protocol

Four verbs, one protocol.

Track, Route, Identify, Source. Every capability is a set of protocol calls against the same underlying ledger.

04 Live demonstration

A certificate that verifies itself.

Each Volum Certificate of Origin is a signed W3C Verifiable Credential. The QR resolves to a live audit page. The record fingerprint, registry node, and custody chain are all machine-readable.

Enter a certificate identifier below to resolve it against the registry, or scan the code on the sample credential.

05 The regulatory floor

Dated in every trading bloc.

Verifiable origin is not a European story. It is a global regulatory floor with binding deadlines through 2028.

Jan 2026 European Union

CBAM full reporting begins

Importers of steel, aluminium, cement, fertiliser, hydrogen, and electricity must file embedded-emissions declarations.

Dec 2026 European Union

Deforestation Regulation binding

Coffee, cocoa, rubber, soy, palm, cattle, and timber require geolocated origin evidence.

Feb 2027 European Union

Battery Digital Product Passport

Cells over 2 kWh must carry a machine-readable passport. First mandatory DPP under ESPR 2024/1781.

2027 Republic of Korea

K-DPP framework

2028 European Union

Textiles, tyres, electronics DPP

ESPR-scoped product groups added to the mandatory digital passport regime.

06 The architecture

Five layers, one wedge.

Volum is not a monolith. Every capability lives in one of five clearly delimited layers, from identity at the perimeter to automation at the core.

  1. L1 Identity Party keys, roles, permissions. W3C VC 2.0 issuer, holder, and verifier model. Verifiable Credentials
  2. L2 Object identity Every shipment, lot, and batch is a first-class object with a stable identifier. GS1 EPCIS 2.0
  3. L3 Event ledger Every custody, transformation, and observation event is written as a signed record. Permissioned chain
  4. L4 Credential layer Certificates of Origin, DPP payloads, and compliance attestations, all as VCs. Verifiable Credentials
  5. L5 Automation VLM-metered contract execution: routing, release, payment, escalation. Smart contracts
07 Access

For institutional participants
and design partners.

Volum is currently onboarding a limited cohort of pilot participants: certifiers, customs administrations, commodity buyers, and issuers of digital product passports. Access is by request.
